MMA Intro
INTRO TO MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
In less than two decades, the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) has seen a phenomenal growth in popularity all over the world. This is all the more remarkable because of an initial resistance to what was regarded as a very violent activity. Now, however, MMA is more often seen for what it really is: a supreme feat of athleticism that requires a blend of exceptional physical and mental skills, rather than a display of violence.
MMA is an intricate merging of techniques and strategies from boxing, Muay Thai kickboxing, wrestling, judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, to mention only a few disciplines. And to develop this combination into an individualistic fighting style can take many years of dedication and vigorous training.
Not surprisingly, then, the possibilities are almost endless as to what can occur in ring or cage. Fighters have to be sufficiently resourceful to arm themselves with the most effective equipment in their arsenal of skills. And they have to be able to do so with lightning speed. Also, unlike some other sports, MMA fighters have no gear such as ball, stick or pad on which to rely. They have only their body and their mind.
How, then, can a sports bettor predict the outcome of an MMA contest? With difficulty! The line between a win and a loss is often as fine as a hair’s breadth. But ultimately, it comes down to the fighter’s skill and perhaps also his experience.
Despite some ongoing opposition to MMA, the sport is nevertheless here to stay. Fans are realizing that, more than the perception of violence, what does in fact predominate are elements of respect and camaraderie among contestants, and the coming together of champions from a variety of sports and related endeavors to demonstrate excellence.
